The Relational Life

The person only . . . knows itself in knowing others, only finds itself in being known by them. -Emmanuel Mounier

Evidenced based theory affirms we are primarily relational creatures. Contentment flows from an inter-dependent existence together. And yet, this quality of life together is enhanced in knowing and learning to live out of one’s individual, authentic self.

It is within this alone/together balance that we find a harmony of both autonomy and attachment- with ourselves, our intimate partner, our family, and our Friendships.

Stories are compasses and architecture; we navigate by them, we build our sanctuaries and our prisons out of them, and to be without a story is to be lost . . . Not a few stories are sinking ships, and many of us go down with these ships even when the lifeboats are bobbing all around us.                                                                                                                                     -Rebecca Solnit

Many of us on our journey are battered by the wind and waves of this fierce world. Our story is often a ‘sinking ship’ lost at sea. As individuals and couples we can’t imagine ‘lifeboats!’

Finding a story that uniquely fits us is a part of therapy. It involves reigniting our imagination and rediscovering our own larger story.

It is within our unique stories that we discover our resilient, thriving selves: both as individuals and couples.

You can argue with the sea
Or you can learn to sail.
